In 1942, legislation was passed to create the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, or SPARS (an acronym takenfrom the Coast Guard motto "Semper Paratus, Always Ready"). As with the U.S. Navy, the SPARS were intended to relieve men from shore duty. Between 1942 and 1946, more than 10,000 women volunteered for service. The new recruits were trained at colleges such as Texas A&M, Iowa State Teachers' College, and Hunter College in New York.
