Quarstein \nIN PERSON AND LIVESTREAMED\nPresenter: John V. Quarstein\, director emeritus of the USS监控Center\nAbout the presentation: \nThe August 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay pitted a pair of the Civil War’s most successful admirals head-to-head – the Union’s David Glasgow Farragut and the Confederacy’s Franklin Buchanan. This engagement was a showdown between these dynamic officers for control of the last major Confederate port on the Gulf of Mexico\, east of the Mississippi. The federal fleet’s dramatic entrance into the bay began with USS Tecumseh striking a torpedo and sinking. Once the Union squadron anchored in Mobile Bay\, Admiral Buchanan decided his only choice was to attack Farragut’s entire command. CSS Tennessee was rammed and pounded by heavy shot\, forcing its surrender. This marked the closing of Mobile Bay as a haven for Confederate blockade runners. \n \n \n \n \n IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION\n \n \n \n \n \nAttending in person?\nThis lecture is free with $1 admission\, and free for Mariners’ Museum Members.
