弗雷德里克·道格拉斯was the most notable African-American of the nineteenth century. A newspaper editor, abolitionist, and ambassador, Douglass was born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He made his first escape attempt aboard a canoe. After this attempt failed, he disguised himself as a sailor, taking advantage of the common presence of black seamen in Maryland.
