Improvements since the 1930’s of Skinner’s Paintings
The term “Better ships” in the exhibit’s title begs the question: “Better than what?” Better might be the result of cheaper to own & operate through better (more focused on economics) designs. The original motto of Newport News Shipbuilding was:
This is a nice shot by Jason from photography of the three recently conserved Dahlgren gun tools: a sponge on the left, a Robinson worm in the middle, and a shot ladle on the right. Handling the objects during the photo session reminded us of how fit the gunners had to be to do their work. The ladle weighs 22 pounds empty and without the handle. The sponge head is 15 pounds. Ouch.
This object was recovered in 2001 from theMonitor’s wreck site. Since its recovery, there has been much speculation as to the function of the artifact. It has been suggested that this object served as some kind of valve, possibly within a radiator-like system. It is also thought that it may be a component of a monitoring instrument, or even a whistle.
